Copies Overnight Lite: A Spirited 10-Year-Old
You may not have noticed, but our masthead is sporting a new volume
number: 10.
Copies Overnight Lite was launched in September 1990 and we've
published an issue each month ever since.
When we started, Copies Overnight
was just two years old. We had two employees (Steve and Chuck). The Docutech
hadn't been invented. Macintosh was winning the clock speed race over DOS
computers with a blazing 40 MHz machine. And, scientists were dabbling with
something called the internet.
New and Improved
As its name implies, Lite has always been a spirited publication,
blending humor with company and product information. Originally, the newsletter
featured a full page of jokes, with one panel of news material. When a survey
determined that our readers wanted more technical information, we expanded our
emphasis on digital technology and printing on-demand topics.
In 1997, we
produced a series of issues to show you examples of various production
techniques, including reinforced Mylar tab dividers, metric paper sizes, coated
stock and pre-printed "shells."
Last yearin response to your
questionswe started a FAQ series that has become a popular feature. Then,
we changed our layout format again to devote equal space to jokes and editorial
information. In the process, we won an APEX award for excellence in newsletter
design, editorial content and overall communications effectiveness.
Lite Online
Our latest innovation is publication of an online version of Copies
Overnight Lite.
The newsletter is posted in HTML format for fast
downloading and easy viewing and in PDF if you want to see the issue in its
original graphic format. All online site addresses are "hot" so you can access
them by a single click. Archived copies of back issues for several years are
available for your review.
Since humor remains a vital ingredient of Lite, a
page of unpublished (with good reason) jokes is created every month to
encourage those "web shy" folks among you to visit our site.
What's Ahead?
Interest in Copies Overnight Lite continues to grow as we add to our
subscriber base. We will continue to keep you abreast of the latest
developments in the digital printing field, while trying to tickle your funny
bone. Meanwhile, we welcome your questions, comments and ideas (and jokes) for
future newsletter topics.
Please let us know if anyone else in your
organization should be put on our mailing list for a free subscription. You may
call, fax or e-mail us.
Acrobat 4.0 to Debut
Adobe Acrobat 4.0 is scheduled to hit the streets soon. This suite of
software from Adobe, used for creating .pdf files, contains a number of
worthwhile improvements over previous versions. If you are currently using
Acrobat to create digital files for Docutech printing, we strongly suggest you
upgrade to version 4.0. If you haven't yet tried Acrobat, we think the new
version is one more reason to consider it.
Properly used, Acrobat allows you
to covert almost any document into .pdf format for printing. Fonts, formatting
and graphics will be faithfully preserved, regardless of the application and
platform used.
Our Stamp of Approval
It isn't every day that Copies Overnight recommends the "X.0" version of
new software (usually we're warning you about bugs and fixes). But, we have
been working with the beta version of Acrobat 4.0 for some time now, and find
that it contains more solutions than problems.
Acrobat consists of three
components: Distiller, Exchange and Reader. Exchange (renamed just plain
"Acrobat" for 4.0) and Distiller should be available in final version by the
time you read this. More details are available on the web at Adobe's website.
The Reader portion of Acrobat 4.0 is already available for free; download
it on the web.
May Day Move
Effective May 1, we move into our new plant at 262 Commonwealth Drive.
The building is located one block west of the current Copies Overnight facility
and across the street from our Distribution Center.
We'll give you the
particulars next month.
