Answers to FAQs About Electronic Files Transmission

We continue to receive questions about digital technology and printing on-demand. Here are answers to timely Frequently Asked Questions about electronic files transmission.

Q.What is FTP...and why does Copies Overnight keep talking about it?
A. FTP is a techno-talk acronym for File Transfer Protocol that allows you to transfer files from one computer to another over the Internet.
Copies Overnight's FTP site is the best way for you to send us your digital files for Docutech printing. It's extremely fast and convenient. Just point your FTP client software to our anonymous site at ftp.onight.com and upload your files.

Easy Access Via Web

Q.Whoa! I don't even think I have FTP software. What do I do now?
A. No problem. Our FTP site is linked to our website so you can upload files using your web browser.
Here's all you have to do:

Go to our website and click on Send Us A Job!

Click on our FTP site.

When your browser shows "Current directory is/," go to the "File" menu to "Upload File..."

Then go to send us a message and let us know that your files have been uploaded.

Note: This method works better with Netscape Navigator than with Internet Explorer. Please let us know if you have any problems.

Site Security

Q. Is the FTP site secure?
A. The site is anonymous so you can access it without an entry password. However, no one else can download — or even view — any of your files.
At your request, we can setup a truly secure FTP directory for the exclusive use of your company with your own password. Just call us or send an e-mail message.
Q.What if I don't have access to the Internet?
A.You can still modem jobs to our computer bulletin board. You'll need our First Class client software to make the connection. Please call and we'll get the software to you.
Our pioneering bulletin board has been a workhorse since 1995 — a long time in this high tech world. We will continue to maintain it for the foreseeable future, but won't be doing any more upgrades. We believe the Internet now offers you the most convenient and open access to transfer your files.
Q.What about using e-mail to send our jobs?
A. E-mail works well for messages, but too many file attachments arrive as charred rubble. We'll talk about the pitfalls of e-mail files transmission in our next FAQ.

Let the Celebration Begin

Although it's only mid-1998, we're ready to pop the cork on January 1, 2000.
Our Y2K program assures our computer systems are primed for business in the new millennium.
If you're trying to deal with giants like Ikon, Quebecor or Xerox for digital printing, you might want to check their progress. We think the big guys may find more Millennium Bugs in their operations than anyone suspected. There's a lot more involved than electronic job files. All your inventory, billing and customer support systems must be compatible.
As a small, high-tech firm, Copies Overnight has been on the leading edge of the digital revolution since our inception in 1987. We have the skills and experience to meet all your technical documentation needs...now and in the next century.

More on the Millennium Bug

You can find a wealth of information concerning Y2K at government websites.
The Small Business Administration has a user-friendly site with checklists and recommendations to solve the problem.
The U.S. government's site offers a more esoteric approach.

Speaking of Bugs...Here's QuarkXPress 4.03

Less than three months after releasing 4.02, Quark, Inc. has issued a 4.03 updater for Mac and Windows.
You can get the update (and 10 pages of known problems and fixes) at Quark's website.
