CAROL STREAM Reports from this Illinois community confirm the death of Coprescos computer bulletin board system.
A postmortem determined the cause of death was from natural causesa lack of speed and sagging technological usefulness. Once the digital printers workhorse for electronic print files transmission, the BBS has been replaced with an updated FTP site.
Like the 14.4 bps modem, a company spokesperson says, the bulletin board was state-of-the- art technology when put into service in 1995. However, we have been offering customers an easy-to-use web interface with our FTP site for several years.
FTP provides a much faster, more convenient way of sending PC and Macintosh digital files for printing. And...proprietary software is not required, the spokesperson claims.
The FTP site is anonymous so it can be accessed without an entry password. But, not even a ghost or goblin can download or view any of the contents of files on the site. A secure site with an exclusive customer password (like abracadabra) can also be established on request, the company representative states.
"We regularly update our print and Internet media to meet the fast-changing needs of the digital printing industry," Steve added.
An ardent crusader for FTP files transmission, the company says scary things can happen to print file attachments sent via e-mail. Many are burned at the stake in their arduous journeys through various computer platforms and Internet servers. Also, e-mail is not a real time medium, the spokesperson explained. Therefore, files are often delayed in transmission or may be completely lost in a cyberspace abyss. FTP provides real time transmission. What is sent, is what is received.
Coprescos FTP site was updated this year to provide even easier customer access and drag and drop files transfer that works like a magic wand.
So Copresco bids farewell to the BBS. May It Rest in Peace. FTP now reigns supreme, the spokesperson concluded, unless a new technological avalanche creates the need for a new burial service.

Q. I read about your disdain for spell checkers in your most
recent TechTopics No. 12 proofreading issue. What do you think about grammar
checkers?
A. Not much. Mike Royko, the famous Chicago newspaper
columnist, once ran the Gettysburg Address through a grammar checker. The
result? It flunked. Enough said.
